Stone Crab Season Oct. 15, 2009 - May 15, 2010 Select restaurants celebrate the opening of stone crab season with specials throughout Lee County. Succulent native stone crab claws, one of Southwest Florida's tastiest delicacies, are that much more precious because they're available only seven months out of the year. The second of three tournaments in the series, the 11th annual Summer Slam Fishing Tournament offers prizes and awards totaling $22,000, including a special division with $12,000 for the Hooters "Catch the Big Ones Snook Bonanza." Strap on your eyepatch and join your mateys at the Fourth Annual Pirate Festival, where you'll find lots of themed food, treasure hunts, a walking pub crawl, a pirate and wench look-a-like contest, ship to shore battle and a Monday hangover brunch. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge for birding and kayaking tours, environmental speakers, a nature photography contest and other earth-friendly activities for all ages. Family Fun Day kicks off the eco-themed week with free tram tours, wildlife presentations, kids' activities and more, and Conservation Through Arts caps the week with wildlife art workshops, nature sketching and more. Celebrate German food, music, dancing and culture at Lee County's largest annual Oktoberfest. Highlights include authentic live entertainment from local music groups plus one direct from Germany, along with plenty of German food and beer. Gates are open Friday 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturday noon to midnight and Sunday noon to 9 p.m. with church services at 11 a.m. Tickets are $5 in advance, $6 at the door. This Gulf-front competition draws more than 60,000 spectators to Fort Myers Beach. This year, the Master Sculptors Competition has been upgraded to include the best of the best current and multi-year champs (there's an amateur's contest, too) along with the Florida State Sculptors Championship and Sand Sculpting 101. Music keeps all five days lively, and the Sand Magic Village features artisan and food booths Friday through Sunday. Location: Fort Myers Beach, between Holiday Inn and Gull Wing. Southwest Florida's largest outdoor food and entertainment festival, Taste of the Town draws more than 15,000 people to downtown Fort Myers each year. More than 40 local restaurants offer samplings from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there's all-day live entertainment and a children's activity area. Admission is $5; children under 10 are free. The festival will feature country and rock 'n' roll music, carnival rides, tropical food and fireworks Friday and Saturday at 9:00 p.m. It kicks off Friday night from 5 p.m. to midnight, and continues on Saturday from noon to midnight and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Location: Sun Splash Family Water Park, Cape Coral. Paddlers, competitors, families and outdoor enthusiasts from around the country are expected to attend the one-of-a-kind eco-event. Ten days of festivities will include canoe/kayak races, a kayak fishing tournament, paddling clinics and demonstrations, seminars, family activities, archaeological and environmental events, guided tours, speakers and more celebrations along the Calusa Blueway paddling trail.
