This 6,400-acre wildlife refuge is home to 238 bird species, 51 types of reptiles, 32 mammal species, paddling trails and a four-mile scenic drive (drive closed Fri.) Visitor center. Guided tours offered through Tarpon Bay Explorers 239-472-8900.

Directions: I-75 South to Exit 131 Daniels Rd., take Daniels west to Summerlin Rd., take a left and continue approx. 10 miles. Cross Sanibel Causeway (toll bridge- $6.00). Once on the island take a right on Periwinkle Way and continue to its end, then take a right on Tarpon Bay Rd. At the next stop sign take a left on Sanibel-Captiva Rd. Floow the road 2 miles, the entrance to the Refuge is on the right.
