Green retreats Seven hotels and resorts on The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel have been certified as Florida Green Lodging properties. The Florida Green Lodging Program recognizes hotel properties that have made major strides in conserving Florida’s natural resources. These hotels and resorts have adopted best practices such as investing in Energy Star equipment, using green lighting and low-flow water features, implementing linen and towel reuse programs, and recycling. The seven local properties that have earned Green Lodging status are: • The Bridgewater Inn, Matlacha – This Old Florida-style motel has a decidedly modern environmental conscience. Drawn in by the pristine nature and island flair, guests come by land and sea to this eco-friendly lodge that’s literally on the water. • Crowne Plaza Fort Myers, Fort Myers – A convenient location defines this green property. The hotel is adjacent to a retail plaza featuring boutiques, restaurants and a 20-screen movie theater, and just minutes away from the airport, beaches and attractions. • Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa, Bonita Springs – This amenity-rich resort blends Four Diamond luxury with a natural, tropical feel. There’s plenty for kids, too, including a waterslide, waterfall, climbing wall and games. • Inn at the Springs, Bonita Springs – “Refreshing" aptly describes this property, which has the charm of a boutique hotel and the creature comforts of a resort. Gulf beaches, shopping, dining and attractions are all within easy reach. • Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa, Fort Myers – This AAA Four Diamond resort is known as much for nature as it is for luxury. The spa treatments use sea-derived products, and the resort’s location makes it an ideal jumping-off point for nature excursions. • Pink Shell Beach Resort & Spa, Fort Myers Beach – The latest resort to reach Green Lodging status, this Four Diamond-rated property is perched at the northern tip of Estero Island. Its star offerings include a full-service spa, sugar-white sand beach and amazing sunset views. • Ocean’s Reach, Sanibel Island – The latest local property to reach Green Lodging status, this Gulf-front condominium resort is ideal for nature lovers. The island’s pure white-sand beach and abundant wildlife are just steps away. Several other hotels and resorts in the area have applied for Green Lodging certification. Other types of local businesses are moving forward with their own green initiatives as well. These efforts echo the area’s long history of environmental stewardship, and the region’s pride in its unspoiled beaches and nature.
