Fort Myers-Sanibel Flying High The Southwest Florida destination makes the cover of US Airways' in-flight magazine.
In the magazine’s extensive coverage of the destination, it describes the area as a place "where a gazillion seashells wash up on toasty beaches." The coverage – actually a series of separate feature stories – touches on everything from local history to booming businesses, weaving in insightful tidbits from locals and fun facts. "Beyond Fort Myers’ and Sanibel Island’s resort façade dwells a multilayered world of surprises," one writer begins. She isn’t kidding. The magazine cites beaches and shelling as major draws, but it also delves deeper into the area, exploring J.N. “Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the Great Calusa Blueway paddling trail, the arts and sports. A "best-of" spread gives the magazine’s picks for Best Breakfast (Lighthouse Café on Sanibel Island), Best Festival (Islands FallFest) and other categories, and a "Did You Know?" section offers up about a half-dozen little-known facts. (Did you know that the popular women’s fashion chain Chico’s got its start on Sanibel Island in 1983?) Perhaps the best endorsements, though, come from local themselves, who describe their home in their own words. Musician Danny Morgan says it best: "Oh Captiva, island of my dreams. You have stolen my heart." To see the coverage in its entirety, click here. For more information on things to do in the Fort Myers-Sanibel area, visit www.fortmyers-sanibel.com/do.
