Lovers Key Launches New Nature Series

Park naturalists will lead programs on sea turtles, moonlight kayaking, nature photography and more.

Lovers Key State Park launches a new nature series.
Lovers Key State Park launches a new nature series.
Nature is “key" to Lovers Key State Park, a coastal paradise tucked away at the sound end of Fort Myers Beach. Now through February, visitors to the park can gain insight into topics ranging from sea turtles to nature photography.

Each month except December, park naturalists and local organizations will lead a new nature series, which they hope will help visitors understand and appreciate the beauty of the park and the natural world beyond it.

In August, guests can get a fascinating look at sea turtle nesting behavior as well as local conservation efforts. They can even get a feel for turtle monitoring by digging up a mock sea turtle nest. September’s program will let participants gaze at the night sky through telescopes, learning some astronomy in the process. A two-day program in October will teach nature painting, and in November visitors can take a moonlight kayak tour through the park’s estuary and back bays.

January’s program will be a nature photography workshop, and on Valentine’s Day couples can participate in a vow renewal ceremony at the beach’s gazebo.

Friends of Lovers Key hopes the nature series will draw new visitors to the park, educate the park’s guests and help raise money for a visitor’s center. All proceeds from the series will go toward the center, which is in the design phase. The plan is for the center to include an interpretive area, a classroom, meeting areas and a gift shop.

Between 750,000 and 900,000 people visit the park every year, and a visitor’s center would act as the park’s hub – a place to spotlight all of the park’s offerings, which include hiking, biking and kayaking.

Fees for the nature series range from $15 to $70, and participation is limited. To register or for more information, click here. To learn more about Lovers Key State Park, click here.
